"The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" was the forerunner and inspiration for much of modern Japanese fantasy -- Yamada Futaro could be described as the granddaddy of Japanese fantasy. Briefly, the novel tells the story of two clans of supernatural ninjas forced to fight each other by the ruler of Japan/5(18).

I came to read this book knowing nothing of Yamada’s work, and never having seen the movie Shinobi: Heart Under Blade or read the manga Basilisk, which are both apparently based on The Kouga Ninja fact, I was interested in this novel simply because the title reminded me of a fantastic animé called Ninja Scroll that I saw back in the ‘90s, and which recently popped back into my 4/5.

Rather, "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" is a translation of the novel by Yamada Futaro, which has been the direct basis of endless manga and movies, including "Basilisk," "Shinobi," and "The Ninja Scrolls." The influence of "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" extends far beyond its immediate derivations, however.4/5.

This is the 2nd book in the 5 book long Kouga Ninja Scrolls series. This book was very much like the first book in the series; lots of ninjas and lots of fighting.

I enjoyed reading it for the most part. This book continues the story of the battle between 10 Iga and 10 Kouga ninja who are vying for the position of Shogun.4/5.

Drama is intensified as the Iga Clan tries to outsmart their opponents by attacking both Kazamachi Shôgen, who has the Kouga copy of the scroll that talks about the Ninja war both clans are into, and Jubei Shimushi, who travels mysteriously through the forest and.
